Skipper Stoute holding on until Brooks returns

All-rounder Kevin Stoute will lead the Barbados Pride in their first two games, but will give way to West Indies A team captain Shamarh Brooks on his return.

President of the Barbados Cricket Association, Conde Riley, indicated yesterday that Stoute would captain the Pride in the first two games of the 2017/2018 Digicel Regional 4-Day Tournament at Kensington Oval, but once Brooks returned to Barbados and was not enlisted for any other West Indies duties he would take over the captaincy from Stoute.

With a past history of top players like Albert Padmore having to give up the Barbados captaincy and position in the team when the Test players returned home, Stoute seemed out of his crease when asked how he would deal with the situation.

Minutes before, the Empire player had indicated he was playing a key role in helping the younger cricketers to deal with the mental component of cricket, but the question seemed to grip and spin sharply as Stoute repeatedly indicated, “That was a good question.”

“Just like the mental approach which I am preaching to the young players, I would have to deal with that situation if it arises by applying some of the teachings which the management have been exposing us to, to make us mentally tougher,” said Stoute.

Stoute indicated that he relished the rivalry between Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago as the competition on the field was just as tight as the friendship off of the square.

Riley later added that Jason Holder, the West Indies Test and one-day captain would lead the Pride in the 50 overs matches. (KB)
