Mystery surrounds the full impact of the National Social Responsibility Levy (NSRL) on Government’s revenue and the cost of living.
Barbados Private Sector Association chairman Charles Herbert said beyond Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler’s recent statement that NSRL had added $50 million to government’s coffers, and anecdotal evidence about price increases, there was a glaring absence of data since the controversial tax was increased from two per cent to ten per cent effective July 1.
He told the Sunday Sun the issue was compounded by the Barbados Statistical Service’s failure to publish retail price indices in recent months.
“We have still not been given clear facts either by the Central Bank or by Government as to the total impact of NSRL. The other concerning factor is that the [Barbados] Statistical Service has not issued the retail price index since April,” Herbert said. (SC)
