Boxing high five for Jones

Ajayi Jones of the Barbados Defence Force Sports Programme (BDFSP) was the star performer of the Carlton Hope/Lionel Hall Memorial Boxing Tournament at the Pirates Cove Beach on Saturday night.

Competing in the Open category, Jones was an unanimous winner over Brandon Lee of the National Gym in their lightweight bout with a 5-0 points victory which highlighted the opening of the Barbados Independence Invitational Games at the outdoor Bay Street venue.

Another BDFSP boxer, Shakaun Lashley, like his gym mate fighting out of the red corner, registered a 5-0 triumph over Ision Fraser of Oldbury Gym in a middleweight contest.

Peter Murray of the National Gym also registered a 5-0 victory, over Derek Hyman of Belfield Gym in a light welterweight encounter.

Among the women, Iprecious Lythcott of Belfield was a 5-0 winner over fellow lightweight Iniggakaya Lythcott, while in a welterweight fight, Belfield’s Brittany Knight scored a 4-1 decision over Keysha Applewhaite of Shaka School.

The youths and juniors were also in action and none of the three bouts went the full distance.

Briar Hall’s Rashawn Holder won by a technical knock-out in Round 2 from Belfield’s Stephan Harding in a lightweight battle.

The aggressive Tyree Weekes-Haynes forced the referee to intervene as early as the first round to stop his one-sided lightweight contest with Zari Parris of Hard Judgment.

Kemar Gaskin made it two victories for Briar Hall when he pounded Donte Powlett of National Gym into submission as the referee halted their middleweight mis-match in the second round. (EZS)
