On Sunday, November 19, Barbados will join over 70 countries in observing International Men’s Day (IMD), which will have as its theme Making a difference for Men and Boys.

Acting Director of the Bureau of Gender Affairs, Patricia Boyce, told the Barbados Government Information Service that the celebration of IMD was important “for improving gender relations, highlighting positive role models and promoting gender equity”.

“The celebration of this day by the Bureau is an indication that it recognises that both sexes have issues that need to be addressed and it is willing to treat all issues equally,” she explained.

A number of activities have been planned leading up to November 19.  On Monday, November 13, the Maurice Byer’s Men’s Health Group will host a discussion on the topic Men and Ageing – Mitigating the Challenges, at the Alexandra School, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

A presentation will be held the following day, Tuesday, November 14, at the David Thompson Health and Social Services Complex (DTHSSC), Glebe Land,    St John, at 6 p.m.  It will be hosted by the DTHSSC’s Men’s Health Group, and presenters will be Senior Environmental Officers at the complex, Richard Bourne and Kevin Watson.

Activities continue on Wednesday, November 15, with a discussion on Elderly/Palliative Care, hosted by the Anglican Men’s Association at the St James Parish Church. It will be moderated by Wendel Sealy.  Panellists will be Trevor Marshall, Reverend Angela Phillips and Reverend Canon Professor Noel Titus.

Also on the cards for the week will be an all-day showcase on Saturday, November 18, at the Queen’s Park Steel Shed, Constitution Road, St Michael, beginning at 10 a.m.  The day’s activities include a display being mounted for men and boys, and a symposium.

The week’s activities culminate on International Men’s Day, Sunday, November 19, with a service of thanksgiving at the Christ is the Answer Family Church, Battaleys, St Peter, starting at 8 a.m.  (BGIS)
