Share post:

In 1974 Lieutenant Colonel Florence Gittens was the first woman ever to be enlisted to serve in the Barbados Regiment, breaking the trend of men only in the military.

A trained nurse and nursing educator, she was the key figure in the establishment of today’s efficient, well-staffed and equipped Medical Unit which the Barbados Defence Force now boasts. She also worked alongside her male counterparts in an administrative capacity in many a mission during her 27 years of service. (GC)
