Minister of Culture Stephen Lashley has condemned the defacing of the statue of Lord Nelson.

In verbal comment issued via the Barbados Government Information Service, he said he had not seen the damge but he was against the act of defacing any public monument in the island.

“In my view, it is immaterial who or what that monument is. Today it is Lord Nelson, tomorrow it could be any other monument.

“While I acknowledge that there has been for years a public debate and discussion on whether or not the statue of Lord Nelson should be removed from where it currently stands and while I’m of the view that we have to face this issue and resolve it as a country one way or the other, I equally believe that anyone  who takes it on themselves to deface or do any damage to public monuments  should equally be dealt with firmly in accordance with the laws of Barbados,” he said.

The controversial statue was discovered this morning marked with blue and yellow paint and graffiti. A sign calling for its removal was also placed at the base. (NB)
