LOOKS LIKE the marathon is gaining popularity.
The move to bring back the full marathon appears to be a successful one, as the longest event of the Run Barbados Weekend looks set to double its number of participants over last year.
Marketing director for race coordinators Islands Races, Kristina Evelyn, broke the news after releasing the initial numbers ahead of today’s registration deadline.
“You know we reintroduced the full marathon two years ago and we started with 38 and last year we had like 50-something and now we already have 90 entries with more still to come, I believe,” Evelyn revealed.
“It’s mostly foreign entries, too. I think it’s just the natural build-up over time, where runners come and have a great experience here and then go back and tell their friends and clubmates, who then in turn come and join them.
“Of course, it helps that we have such a great country in Barbados and the runners truly enjoy the island experience they get here and look to come back every year,” she added. (JM)
