‘Spread burden’ of adjustment

A REGIONAL ECONOMIST is questioning the fairness of Barbados’ austerity measures.

Guyanese national Collin Constantine, who is pursuing a PhD at Kingston University, London, said Government risked “socialising misery” among the average working population while giving the offshore financial sector a “safe haven”.

Constantine raised his concerns in his new research Sharing The Burden Of Adjustment: The Case Of Barbados, which he provided to the DAILY NATION.

He is urging Government to choose a more equitable approach to fiscal stabilisation in the “very short term”, one which spreads the burden of adjustment more evenly.

“An equitable approach includes the removal of the [National Social Responsibility Levy] or at least a substantial reduction and the use of progressive taxation on wages, profits, rents and wealth,” he recommended. (SC)
