Call for more to be tested

Barbados is making inroads in the fight against HIV/AIDS, but there may be almost 3 000 people unknowingly carrying the virus, and possibly spreading it through unprotected sex.

And Professor Emeritus Sir Errol (Mickey) Walrond, the first chairman of the HIV/AIDS Commission, is hoping more Barbadians, especially those in the vulnerable LGBT community, or persons who engage in promiscuous behaviour, come forward to be tested, know their status, and be educated on their  sexual habits going forward.

The doctor, who has been involved in the AIDS prevention fight for almost three decades, made the suggestion in an exclusive interview with the SUNDAY SUN. World AIDS Day was celebrated last Friday.

Sir Errol said Barbados’ main concern now should be trying to get as many of those in the 1.5 per cent of the population which make up unknown HIV-positive people, into the country’s treatment net. (BA)
