Barbadians with a taste for ham at Christmas season may be left with hard choices this year.
This is because of a hike in the price of the traditional treat blamed on recent tax increases.
The popular picnic hams are being retailed for between $70 to $100, according to size. A check with a range of shoppers yesterday revealed that many of them felt the upper end of the price range was too high for a picnic ham. Indeed, some said they were going to either cut back or opt for the cheaper Hilldale brand, a grade B meat, rather than the more popular Farmer’s Choice or Eve varieties.
Premier picnic ham is going for almost $30 per kilogramme, with slight variations at different outlets, while the much larger and more expensive leg hams was around $35 per kg with one costing in excess of $280.
On the other hand, the Hilldale brand, which is also local, offers picnic hams between $60 and $70. (CA)
