Melnyk’s warning

Prominent businessman Eugene Melnyk is convinced that the cliff at the Crane Beach in St Philip is not as secure as it may seem.

So concerned was he, that Melnyk, who owns one of the two properties leading to the famous beach, told the SUNDAY SUN he hired  a team of engineers from a reputable firm in Canada to carry out a geotechnical study of the cliff 20 years ago.

According to him, the engineers found that the cliff was unsafe to build on. As a result he filed an injunction in the High Court to prevent the Crane Resort from constructing any more buildings on top of it.

Melnyk, a Canadian who owns the Ottawa Senators ice hockey team, said as far as he was aware that injunction was still in place.

SUNDAY SUN investigations revealed that the court action had prevented Government from carrying out much needed rehabilitation work at the beach, which in 2015 was named among the ten best beaches in the world. (MB)
