The increased police patrols have made a positive impact on crime in The City, with Commissioner of Police, Tyrone Griffith saying crime there was now very low.
Following a walk through yesterday, the top cop told the media he was pleased with the force’s efforts but still offered words of caution for shoppers.
“This does not mean persons visiting The City should not be careful. Do not expose any money and be aware of your surroundings,” he said.
Griffith also said the force has put measures in place to address the increase in firearm crime, though he did not elaborate. Referring to the recent night time robbery in Brittons Hill, St Michael, where food vendor David Benn and his clients were robbed at gunpoint, he also advised business owners operating at night to be aware of their surroundings and to utilise security such as cameras.
Two men have so far been arrested and charged for that crime.
A licensed firearm was taken from one of the patrons and while Griffith would not comment on an active investigation, he did give some advice to legal firearm owners.
“A licensed firearm is not necessarily the answer to crime. While it can assist a person in foiling a crime, if you get caught off guard, it is no use. Some people are deserving of owning a firearm but it has to be managed properly,” he said.
The commissioner advised against any firearm owner leaving their guns at home, especially if there were others who were aware of its location. He said, should an owner not want to walk around with their gun at any time, then they could leave it with police temporarily. (CA)
