Burke improves ranking to 128

Young Barbadian Josh Burke has ended the year as the 128th ranked surfer on the international World Qualifying Series after making a jump of 36 spots.

Burke, 20, enjoyed another outstanding year of competition experiencing major highlights that included becoming the first surfer from Barbados to qualify in the prestigious Volcom Pipe Pro held at the most famous and dangerous wave in the world (Pipeline) on the North shore of Oahu Hawaii.

He had performed beyond expectations, winning his round two heat against known Pipeline experts to finish a commendable 33rd.

Burke also became the first Bajan to qualify in a World Surf League (WSL) Men’s 10 000 Qualifying Series, the highest level before the World Championship Tour.

In addition, Burke, who is sponsored by Billabong, Reef Footwear, RPD Surfboards, Nixon Watches, Vonzipper  Eyewear, Dakine and Futures, distinguished himself at the WSL Qualifying Series 3000 Barbados Surf Pro by placing third.

It was the second full year for the multiple Barbados national champion in various divisions competing on the WSL Qualifying Series tour. (PR/EZS)
