Holder bypassed

Jason Holder, who led Barbados Pride to last season’s regional Super50 cricket title, has been bypassed for the captaincy this year.

Holder, who is also the West Indies one-day captain, has been named in the 14-man squad to face the T&T Red Force in the opening match of the Super50 Cricket Cup 2018 on Tuesday at Kensington Oval, but surprisingly will play under Kraigg Brathwaite, who has limited one-day experience.

Brathwaite has played just ten one-day internatonals, while Holder has appeared in 70 matches.

The 26-year-old Holder, has led the West Indies in 49 one-day internationals, the last of them just three weeks ago in New Zealand, so it is hard to understand why he is not leading his national team.

This is another clear message that those who pick the Barbados team are not in sync with the West Indies selectors following the decision to have Shamarh Brooks retained as captain of the four-day team ahead of Brathwaite, who is the West Indies vice-captain.

There is no place in the squad for struggling wicketkeeper batsman Shane Dowrich, with Shai Hope, as in the case with the West Indies team, taking the gloves.

Left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican, lefthanded opener Anthony Alleyne and fast bowler Miguel Cummins, who were part of the triumphant 2017 squad, have been left out.

Promising fast bowler Chemar Holder, who made such a favourable impression last weekend in the Digicel Professional Four-day Tournament with an eight-wicket haul against champions Guyana Jaguars, is in the squad, along with 20-year-old allrounder Shamar Springer, who was part of the West Indies side that captured the 2016 ICC Under-19 World Cup in Bangladesh.

Lefthanded opener Omar Phillips, who has been on the injured list, is on the comeback trail and has been included in the one-day squad. As expected Justin Greaves, who has been having a commendable season, is among the 14. (MK)

Squad: Kraigg Brathwaite (captain), Sulieman Benn, Carlos Brathwaite,  Jonathan Carter, Roston Chase, Justin Greaves, Chemar Holder, Jason Holder,  Shai Hope, Ashley Nurse, Omar Phillips, Kemar Roach, Shamar Springer and  Kevin Stoute.
