Not in the bag

More than a year after the plastic bag deterrent fee was proposed, one of its most vocal advocates is revealing that the Future Centre Trust might just be changing its strategy on the highly controversial fee.

Director of advocacy Kammie Holder said the idea might be in for a reshape as the non-governmental organisation looks to add straws and styrofoam containers to the mix.

“We are not giving up. It’s been a success despite only having three main businesses,” he declared.

It was in November, 2016, when the idea for a deterrent fee to reduce the volume of single use of plastic bags was mooted. It was a collaboration between the Trust and BICO and would see customers paying a 15 cent fee for every plastic bag they received from merchants. (HLE)
