DO MORE!

THE PRIVATE SECTOR is being urged to do more to commemorate the life of National Hero Errol Barrow.

That call has come from former deputy principal of the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill, Professor Pedro Welch, who told the DAILY NATION he did not believe enough was being done by that sector to celebrate the achievements of the Father of Independence.

On Sunday, Barrow’s birthday, the Barbados Cruising Club honoured him by erecting signage at Aquatic Gap, St Michael, for his contribution to watersports.

However, Welch said apart from that tribute, the private sector had done very little else to acknowledge the accomplishments of Barbados’ first Prime Minister.

Many Barbadians mostly used the day to hang out with friends and family or engage in social activities, whether at homes or picnic spots across the island.

At the popular Browne’s Beach, Bay Street, St Michael, members of the 30-man “Beach Cabinet” were seen eating boulgo and “cracking jokes”. Among them were Cultural Ambassador Mighty Gabby, and veteran calypsonian Adonijah.

“We come out here to socialise, talk about current affairs and have a laugh with family and friends,” said Adonijah. “And we have been so for years. Actually, [late musician Adrian “Boo” Husbands] started this and today special is a special day because we are making a tribute to him; last Friday was a year he passed away.” (RB)
