Works is set to begin soon on the construction of berth six at the Bridgetown Port.
This was revealed yesterday by Minister of Tourism Richard Sealy, who was speaking during a press conference at Flagstaff Road, St Michael, to begin construction on the road.
“I was happy to be a part of a CAF loan to extend the berthing capacity at the Bridgetown Port, berth five, [where] an additional 75 metres allowed us to home port extra vessels, and allowed us to take even more tonnage on stream. For that reason we had a record year in terms of number of calls and cruise passengers, and we’re going to grow that number because we have the capacity.
“That $55 million loan was given to the central Government from CAF and allowed to put it in as equity to strengthen Barbados Port Inc.’s balance sheet, and is allowing them now to do a berth six, which will mean even more capacity, and more jobs, more happy taxi operators, more foreign exchange and more economic growth; in essence, take the country in another direction,” he said, adding that the CAF loan was given through the CAF programme with the Development Bank of Latin America.
