Outages signal it’s time for green energy

We are kept from our goal not by obstacles, but by a clear path to a lesser goal. – Robert Brault, American writer and author.

Residents of St Philip have been experiencing more than usual power outages in recent weeks and months.

Within recent days they have experienced power outages that have subsequently created unwelcome water and telephone outages.

These outages, with their attendant disruptions and inconveniences, can be avoided if the right things are done, with the right methods and by the right people.

There is absolutely no reason why these outages cannot become archival relics, only fit for a museum.

One would think that enough time has elapsed and a greater number of citizens, both private and corporate, should be capable of generating and storing renewable energy, thereby removing any possibility of electricity, water and telephone outages.

The generation and storage of renewable energy by citizens other than those who currently operate in the oligopolistic energy sector can be considered a “one-fit-all” solution for the problems being experienced.

The citizens of Barbados will only reap success if our elected representatives are entreated to enact legislation, create an enabling business environment and be fully committed to 100 per cent green energy initiatives.

Maybe we need to reflect on Robert Brault’s warning, desist from picking the low-hanging fruits, prioritise our goals and be results-oriented.
