Hinds does it for Marooners

A fine all-round performance by veteran Ryan Hinds propelled Combined Campuses and Colleges Marooners to a whopping 115-run victory over the Windward Island Volcanoes as the 2018 Cricket West Indies Super50 Cricket Festival began at the sunny 3Ws Oval yesterday.

Hinds’ Man of the Match performance helped the home team gain a bonus point when the visitors were dismissed for 113 in 29.3 overs in reply to the Marooners’ 228 in 48.2 overs.

The 36-year-old Hinds came to the crease after openers Kyle Corbin and Kjorn Ottley had featured in an opening stand of 94 after they had been sent in. Kjorn Ottley struck 60 from 88 balls with two sixes and four fours while skipper Corbin’s 44 included three sixes and two fours.

The Volcanoes came roaring back into the game when Kesrick Williams, in an incisive second spell of four for 30 in five overs, triggered a lower order collapse. From 187 for five in the 39th over the Marooners lost their last five wickets for 41 runs.

This was after Hinds (27) and Vikash Mohan (20) had posted 42 for the fifth wicket before the intervention of Williams.

Hinds’ influence on the game continued when, on opening the bowling with his left-arm slow stuff, captured the mature pair of Johnson Charles for a duck and Andre Fletcher who scored a quick-fire 25 from 18 balls with five fours.

In-form opener Devon Smith was dismissed for a rare duck by pacer Jermaine Levy. Khesan Ottley next snared Kirk Edwards and Kavem Hodge and with the run out of Tyrone Theophile, the match was effectively over as the Marooners plunged to 45 for six.

The lower order rallied for a while with Delorn Johnson and Kyle Mayers contributing 28 and 27 respectively.

Hinds capped a fine all-round match with the best figures of three for 22 from eight overs. (HE)
