Women in 1-1 draw

Barbados women played to a 1-1 draw against Martinique in their first international friendlyof the year at the Stade Georges Gratiant in Lamentin in Martinique over the weekend.

With a new line-up, and their youngest player being UWI Blackbirds forward Caitlin Padmore, Barbados Football Association’s technical director Ahmed Mohamed was confident the team would be effective.

Both teams ended the first half without scoring, but in the 77th minute the hosts deposited the first goal of the night. However, it was Mavericks forward Felicia Jarvis, who nine minutes later, scored the Bajan Tridents lone goal of the night off a free kick to level the playing field.

“It was really a good game, even though we had less experienced players. We started with three who played for the first time. The squad were also quite young. Martinique had us physically, but in the second half we adapted into the game intensity, and from there the game went differently and we were able to score a goal,” Mohamed told MIDWEEK SPORT.

“I would say the outstanding player of the night was Cadijah Mars who played a hell of a game, with Caitlin playing the whole 90 minutes. I’m also proud of Nashandi Clarke who played up until the 70th minute when she went off with an injury.”

The Bajan Tridents will resume training this week, as they prepare to face St Kitts and Nevis at the Wildey AstroTurf on March 25, aheadof the World Cup qualifiers in May. (RA)
