King knocks out Green in Round 4

LOCAL BOXER Keithland King has secured his second knockout victory in the ring since starting his professional career last year.

King knocked out Guyanese Anson Green one minute and 35 seconds into the fourth round of their junior middleweight battle at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, Guyana, recently.

Their fight was the last added to the six-fight Bad Blood fight card organised in a collaborative effort by the Guyana Boxing Board of Control and NexGen Global Marketing.

This was Green’s comeback and eighth appearance in the ring, after being knocked out by Jamaican Michael Gardener on July 2 last year. Green had won two of his previous outings and lost five, while King came off a high after winning his debut match against American Rob Mitchell last August.

Despite the two-hour late start, King was in fine form and went on to register a fourth round knockout.

“It was a great opportunity for me. He was favoured to win, and it was felt that he would carry me to the edge. He has more experience as a pro, but not more experience in the ring fighting. My amateur career is one of the best, and that was my asset heading into the ring,” King told NATION SPORT.

However, King is once again looking for sponsorship to propel his professional career forward.

“I had to pay everything out there. I was telling one of my friends I am not known in the professional world as compared to the amateur world, and I don’t have a manager. I had to use the opportunity to put myself out there, so people would know who I am. Guyana is one of the homes of pro boxing in the Caribbean,” he said.

King noted that Guyana had fights every month and he believed if he is given the opportunity and can secure a major sponsor he could improve his rankings.

“They want me to come back down there and fight but my problem is that sponsorship is hard to get. I was invited to train in Washington, DC, but because of the lack of sponsorship I couldn’t go. It would be great to be able to go out there and work towards making myself better to represent Barbados on the professional card,” he said. (RA)
