Government’s latest plan to revive the ailing economy has been endorsed by the trade unions and private sector – but with conditions.
Toni Moore, general secretary of the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU); Cedric Murrell, president of the Congress of Trade Unions and Staff Associations of Barbados (CTUSAB), and Charles Herbert, chairman of the Barbados Private Sector Association (BPSA), are all for the Barbados Sustainable Recovery Plan 2018 (BSRP), which Prime Minister Freundel Stuart said would be laid in Parliament shortly.
Each wrote statements in the foreword of the BSRP, a copy of which was obtained by the DAILY NATION. Each acknowledged the plan was a major effort to get Barbados onto a path of recovery.
However, Moore said though the BWU recognised its membership would be called on to make sacrifices, it expected consultation on any measures to be taken.
“The BWU accepts that the challenges are myriad and that there are several levels of need that have to be addressed. This union feels, however, that where the objective is to set the conditions to permit all groups to benefit, then recovery will be healthy and the entire country will benefit. Approaches to social dialogue, as witnessed during the past five years, will not suffice.” (SP)
