THE PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC of China is looking to the Royal Barbados Police Force to ensure the safety of its citizens and property here in Barbados.
China’s Ambassador to Barbados, Yan Xiusheng, made this appeal during a presentation of two segways to Commissioner of Police Tyrone Griffith at Police Headquarters, Roebuck Street yesterday.
Underscoring Barbados’ enhanced relationship with China and its “deepened cooperation in the field of law enforcement and security”, Yan Xiusheng hoped that the “Barbadian Police Force will continue to support and facilitate Chinese nationals’ stay, employment and living here in Barbados and ensure the safety of the lives and property of local Chinese companies and community”.
This appeal coincides with reports from other islands such as Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago that Chinese were being singled out for harassment by nationals of those islands.
Yan Xiusheng said the Chinese Embassy remained committed to building capacity of the local force and fulfilling its obligation to promote judicial and law enforcement between the two countries.
He is hoping the two machines will enhance a swift response of police to calls.
Griffith assured the Chinese Embassy that the equipment would be effectively utilised.
“Those two segways would go a long way in ensuring that we look after the safety of not only our visitors, but Barbadians as well, because we are venturing out into other areas apart from than those mainly traversed by visitors to our country,” said Griffith.(JS)
