There should be no doubt in Antoine Rico Carter’s mind that it’s over between him and his ex-girlfriend.
After being sent countless voice notes and video messages, having her house entered and her money stolen by him, the woman told the District “A” Magistrates’ Court on Friday, she wanted a protection order to ensure he stayed away from her.
Carter, a 29-year-old vendor, of Perseverance Drive, Jackson, St Michael, had pleaded guilty to entering Taria Jackman’s house on February 28, and stealing $70, as well as damaging a window belonging to her on the same date.
He was ordered to pay a total of $2 984 in compensation, which included $200 in costs.
The court also placed him on a bond for 12 months, which carries a six-month prison term if breached.
“I would like a restraining order against him,” Jackman told the court. “For the last three months, I have video messages, voice notes he would send from different people phones. I would like a restraining order.”
The court had just heard from prosecutor Constable Victoria Taitt, that the relationship between the two had ended on February 9.
The woman was at home when she heard a noise upstairs. She investigated and saw Carter crawling through the window of her daughter’s bedroom. She got scared and secured herself in her bedroom.
Carter then made his way through the house, searching as he went. He took up the money from her purse and then went out into the backyard. She watched as he tried to peep into her bedroom window and became afraid that he would try to enter.
Carter then made his way back into the house, found the keys to her bedroom and proceeded to unlock the bedroom door.
But the woman stopped him by yelling at him. She ran and armed herself with a knife and chased him into the road.
She went back inside and stood in her doorway. But Carter returned and began to throw stones at the house. The woman closed the door and the stones broke one of thesash windows.
Jackman then ran into her yard, took up a collins and ran back to the front of the house. By this time, however, Carter had disappeared.
In his defence, Carter said: “Everything there is true except for the part of the $70. I ain’t tek up the $70; I tek up $20.”
Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant also ordered him to stay at least 200 yards away from Jackman for the 12-month period of his bond.
Carter returns to court on June 1. (HLE)
