Barbados Labour Party (BLP) leader Mia Mottley has promised to abolish Constituency Councils, saying they had been a blotch on the Barbadian landscape.
She made the pledge Sunday night while addressing party faithful at Sheffield Playing Field in Lower Estate, St George.
She told the crowd Constituency Councils would be replaced by People’s Assemblies where members would not be handpicked, but elected by the people.
Mottley said it was about creating more opportunities for ordinary people to participate in what the BLP wanted to establish.
“We are not going to create privileged punks about here. We are not going to create a system where only a few shall have a say. We also believe that these assemblies could do other things.”
She also contended that the Freundel Stuart administration had gone back to Queen Victoria’s days, when offenders could be fined or confined for the smallest breaches of the law. (NC)
