Former Governor General Sir Elliott Belgrave spent a nostalgic 87th birthday yesterday in his boyhood district and at his primary school in Boscobel, St Peter.

Sir Elliott, who retired from office last year, treated pupils at the school which is now renamed the Elliott Belgrave Primary School.

For more than two hours he was entertained by the wee ones as well as the staff and he in turn shared with them some of his birthday cake and thanked them for keeping him company on his special day.

He said that he could not have spent his birthday in any better way than in their company and as one of his birthday gift to them, he made a monetary contribution to the school.

During the celebrations Sir Elliott also received several gifts from students and the staff as they performed some of his favourites items including the sentimental Ash Grove.

Sir Elliott, who was accompanied by wife Lady Belgrave, was accompanied by specially invited friends, including his former aide de camp Captain Ashton Caddle and his cousin Carl Morris.

As he was about to leave several of the children crowded him, entreating him to stay. Alas, he had another appointment. He promised to return. (AC)
