PHILIP CLARKE had quite the homecoming.

The veteran cyclist celebrated his return to Barbados in grand style, winning Sunday’s Speightstown criterium in a bunch sprint at the finish.

Riding from the bus terminal to Haywoods and back in 30 laps of a 1.2k loop, the seasoned Massy United rider outsprinted time trial record-holder Russell Elcock of Team FTR in his first race on his return from Trinidad.

Clarke’s teammate and reigning national time trial champ Jesse Kelly finished third.

It capped an extremely successful day on the road for the Massy Club as Dominic Howard and Kyle Gill copped the top two spots in category two after relegating Team Swift’s Chayne Goodman to third place.

Adam Marshall was victorious in the Tiny Mite category while Kelly’s younger brother, Jonah, won the BMX division.

The Barbados Cycling Union season continues on April 14 with an individual time trial followed by a point-to-point race on the following day that starts at Williams Industries and goes through several parishes. (JM)
