A 63-year-old man who stole breakfast items will have several months of free meals at Her Majesty’s Prison Dodds.
Rodney Markley Murrell, of Evelyn Avenue, Bayville, St Michael, pleaded guilty when he appeared in the District “A” Magistrates’ Court to stealing a pack of Nescafe coffee worth $23.99, and three packs of sliced ham valued at $17.99 from Popular Discount, Spry Street, The City on Monday.
The court heard that on that same Monday, March 26, Murrell, who is a painter by trade, went into the store around 8:20 a.m. and was monitored by security. He reportedly took up three packs of sliced ham and placed them in a shirt pocket; proceeded to another aisle, took up the coffee and put it in his right pants pocket and went past the checkout point without paying.
Security caught him just outside the store and police were summoned.
Murrell gave his name as Browne, but a search of his person turned up an identification card with his given name.
He admitted to Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant that he was “wrong” and placed himself at the mercy of the court.
Cuffy-Sargeant observed that Murrell had a history dating back to his younger days for a number of offences including robbery, theft, burglary and personal injury.
She sentenced him to nine months in jail. (YB)
