Fun in the sun

Salvation Army church members and the public enjoyed a day of activities and supported its band at the same time yesterday.

Captain Dwayne Broome, one of the organisers of the family fun day, said the youth department usually held a sports day but decided to turn that event into a family fun day, where they could broaden the activities and raise much-needed funds.

“The youth department is a very big ministry, with a variety of sections. We have the band and timbrelists and we need instruments to help support that unit,” Broome said.

He said the band had about 40 people and some recruits from across all age groups, but though some were willing to perform they could not afford to.

From the day’s activities, the Salvation Army hoped to raise $5 000 to upgrade the instruments, but said $20 000 would be needed to run all the youth programmes for the year.

Members of Salvation Army churches from across the island gathered on the grounds of the old Banks Brewery, Wildey, St Michael, for the event, which saw patrons enjoy activities including massages, health checks, food and drink, jumping tent, face painting and karaoke. They also took part in a variety of races as part of the annual sports day. (LK)
