Entertainer Leigh and a band of talented musicians are off to Newfoundland to represent Barbados as a part of the Club One New Releases Canadian TV series.
Yesterday, at the Grantley Adams International Airport, Leigh was accompanied by drummer Serge Phillips and background vocalist and guitarist Ashlee Tang. They will be met by another Barbadian, entertainer Isobella Burnham, who lives in England.
Each season of the television show, musicians are selected from Canada and the Caribbean to participate in the international musical showcase.
During the process, each artiste had to perform original music and tell producers about their musical journey. The 27-year-old singer, whose real name is Ashleigh Phillips, performed Burn and 45 from her debut EP Leigh. As the representative, she also had to travel with the band to Trinidad last month.
“I’ve been playing drums from age four, without training, up until I did music at the Barbados Community College. So it was a warm feeling when I found out we’d get to represent Barbados. So I’m feeling honoured doing something that I love to do,” Serge said.
“The trip to Trinidad was pretty good. We got to mix with people from the region and Newfoundland and it’s really good to represent Barbados,” Tang added.
Leigh thanked the Barbados Cultural Industries Development Authority for their contribution and for believing in her brand.
“This trip is special as well because along with writing new songs with our Canadian partners, we also get to do a ten-minute pitch meeting with [organisers] of North by Northeast, which is Toronto’s largest summer music festival,” Leigh said. (TG)
