Chelsea Tuach has caught another big wave in her surfing career. The talented Barbadian female surfer has risen to the top of the World Surf League (WSL) 2018 North American Rankings and is currently ranked 14th on the WSL International Rankings.

She became the first Barbadian female to win a WSL 3000 event when she caught the best waves and displayed some outstanding manoeuvres to be named the first female champion during the Martinique Surf Pro last week.

She told NATION SPORT everything just fell into place for her during that competition.

“It was a phenomenal event. It was nice to go to Martinique for the first time. I was really in tune with the waves and we had great conditions for the whole week.

“I’m also on some new equipment so I feel like everything just fell into place. I was in a really good mindset and rhythm and it all just worked out,” she explained.

She said she was extremely pleased to represent Barbados in the Caribbean and that everyone there had been quite supportive.

“I was from Barbados and the guy who won was from Italy and those are the two places that you don’t see a lot of surfers coming out of so it was nice for the surf industry to see a girl from Barbados and a guy from Italy win this major event.

“It gave recognition to some of the smaller nations that have a smaller representation in the surfing world,” she said.

She is now on to Kuri, Indonesia, where she will be competing in the WSL 1000.

Though that competition was a much minor one she was using it as preparation for the major 6000 events, scheduled for June and July in Mexico and the United States.

“It’s a smaller event but it’s going to be good practice for me. My whole idea about going is that there is a lot of good waves and there is a lot of islands that I can go to. I can get in some practice for the rest of my year”. (RG)
