Lighting the way

Barbados’ lighthouses are looking better than ever. Gordon’s Lighthouse in the south has already been reopened and Ragged Point Lighthouse in the East is looking good.

Contractor Wayne Clarke, managing director of Clarke & Associates Construction Inc. which is undertaking the rehabilitation, said there was still some work to be done and any donations were welcome.

“Remember this is a private undertaking. We are open to any contributions, and if anyone has any old pictures of East Point, we would gladly accept them to place inside,” he said.

Clarke said they had completed the tower section and most of the cottage area, but had run into a snag with the dome.

“The dome has been heavily damaged, only six of the 24 bolts were still in place, so we had to take it off to take to our yard to refurbish it,” he said.

When complete, Ragged Point will be a museum and a bar and restaurant.

Gordon’s Lighthouse at South Point, Christ Church, was reopened last Thursday by Minister of Tourism Richard Sealy. (CA)
