Police have taken two employees of the Bridgetown Port and the driver of a freighting truck into custody, following a million-dollar drug bust last Thursday.

In a daring daylight smuggling attempt the three men were caught in what was reportedly a second trip into the port of entry. The two employees work in maintenance, were under surveillance prior, aroused the suspicions of security officials at the Port before the arrest.

A source said that one of the men had entered the port in a car earlier and after exiting parked the car nearby and returned into the Port in a truck. After a while inside the facility the men attempted to leave and were intercepted at the gate by a vigilant security officer, who noticed that something was off about the vehicle and the men.

After they were questioned, the police were called in, the huge stash of drugs was discovered and the men were quickly taken into custody.

As police were carrying out their investigations, the source said, the car that had been parked outside the Port earlier by one of the men was broken into and some contents removed.

Last night, police spokesman Inspector Rodney Inniss said the Drug Squad was “investigating the circumstances surrounding the interception of 465.7 lbs of cannibis which was discovered in a vehicle by the authorities at the Bridgetown Port on Thursday about 12:15 pm”.

He said two Barbadian males are currently assisting with investigations and an update would be given in due course. (RA/STARCOM NETWORK)
