Barbados may yet salvage something from the Gold Coast.
The men’s 4×100 relay team kept this country’s slim medal hopes alive at the Commonwealth Games after advancing to tomorrow morning’s final in Queensland, Australia.
Running in a very fast heat 2, the squad of Shane Brathwaite, Ramon Gittens, Nicholas Deshong and Burkheart Ellis advanced as one of the two fastest qualifiers after finishing fourth behind England (38.15), Jamaica (38.44) and Nigeria (38.52) in a season’s best time of 38.95 seconds.
They stand as Barbados’ only saving grace at a meet where the country has failed to deliver a single medal while watching just one other competitor advance to a final.
Justin St John and Olympian Michael Maskell return tomorrow for the second day of qualifying in the men’s trap after finishing 23rd and 29th respectively to drop out of medal contention. (JM)
