TORONTO – Barbadian Patrick Husbands missed out on the opening day of the new Woodbine season when one of this wins was overturned through disqualification.

The veteran rider reached the wire first in the CAN$120 000 Wando Stakes in race six aboard 2-1 chance Machtree, with Inge finishing second and Tale of Vienna taking third.

However, with Machtree lugging in during the stretch run of the mile and sixteenth event, jockey Omar Moreno aboard Tale of Vienna, lodged an appeal for interference which was upheld.

Rafael Hernandez, the rider of favourite Pipers Warrior, also claimed foul against Tale of Vienna which was also upheld.

The decisions saw Inge upgraded to first with Titochip second and Pipers Warrior, third.

Husbands made up for the disappointment in the following race, combining with 4-1 choice Sweet Romance to beat the three-year-old and upwards in a 5-1/2 furlong sprint.

The seven-time Woodbine jockey champion raced the four-year-old bay gelding off the pace set by Lillz Pearl before sweeping to the front with a sixteenth to run, and taking the wire 1-1/2 lengths clear.

Fellow Barbadian Juan Crawford was also in winner’s row, making all the running with 6-1 choice Professor Hartwick to brush aside the three-year-old and upward maidens in race two over five furlongs. (CMC)
