In an effort to assist in driving awareness towards the importance of environmental stewardship, Scotiabank and the Future Centre Trust (FCT) teamed up to launching an eco-art challenge on World Earth Day.

The challenge, now in its sixth year, encourages students between the ages of six and sixteen to submit original artwork that boasts of their love for Barbados’ coasts. This year’s theme is The Sea And Me and students have until May 31 to submit entries.

The initiative also saw staff of the two entities distributing reusable shopping bags to customers in each of Scotiabank’s branches. Each member of Scotiabank’s team also received a reusable bag. Scotiabank’s Marketing Manager with responsibility for Marketing Programmes, Cristal Jackman said the initiative formed part of a wider effort to drive environmental consciousness throughout the Bank’s units as staff were also challenged to submit ideas that would assist the Bank in protecting the environment.

“We have a responsibility both on an individual and corporate level to play our part in preserving the earth that we’ve been gifted,” she said. “Earth Day gives us an opportunity to reflect on how far we’ve come and to see what further impact we can make.”

She also mentioned that climate change forms part of the Bank’s seven key strategic corporate social responsibility priorities.

Earth Day was celebrated around the world on Sunday, April 22. (PR)
