Family members of 59-year-old Frederick Decourcey Gilkes are worried.

Gilkes, who spends time between the family home in French Village, St Peter and Lakes, St Andrew, where he lives, went for his usual walk around 4 a.m. on Monday and has not returned.

Vernon Harris said his brother usually did a circle of the Lakes area for his morning walk and when he did not return, a close friend of many years contacted him around 7 a.m.

Police, joined by Gilkes’ relatives, searched the St Andrew district on Monday, but this yielded no clues.

They continued searching yesterday morning, this time joined by the canine unit. It extended to the East Coast.

Gilkes’ friend, who did not want to be named, told said: “As long as persons were up and moving around, someone should have seen him. I am not sure of the mysterious circumstances surrounding this whole situation and it has me very uncomfortable.”

Gilkes, the father of one daughter, turns 60 in November. He has six brothers and one sister and is said to be a key part of the support system for his elderly mother, who is also ailing. His brothers have opted not to tell their mother he is missing.

Gilkes was a former long-time employee of Cable & Wireless. (KG)
