The National Insurance Department has uncovered multiple cases of cheque fraud and is urging retailers to be vigilant.

Deputy director of the National Insurance Scheme (NIS), Jennifer Hunte, told the Weekend Nation they received several reports of cheques which are similar to the NIS benefit cheques, being tendered for a combination of cash and services at business places.

Notices were issued in the press and Hunte did not disclose too much information as the police are involved.

She told business places to remind cashiers to conduct standard “know your customer procedures”.

These include looking at the cheque, identifying the person who is presenting the cheque and verifying identification before handing over cash. (SAT)
