The National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) has not sold out public servants, nor did it collude with the then opposition Barbados Labour Party (BLP) to bring down the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) in the May 24 General Election.
That has been made clear by NUPW president Akanni McDowall, in response to allegations made in the Upper House on Wednesday by outspoken Opposition Senator Caswell Franklyn.
Speaking during debate on the Public Service (General) Order 2018, Franklyn claimed the NUPW had “gotten into bed” with the BLP to help bring down the Freundel Stuart-led DLP administration, then sold out public service employees by agreeing to a five per cent wage increase “ten minutes” into negotiations with the new BLP Government.
Franklyn added that public servants felt that way since the NUPW had long held a firm stance of asking for a 23 per cent increase during the tenure of the Stuart administration, but had rushed to accept the new Government’s offer.
But McDowall quickly defended the NUPW. (BA)
