AnimeKon 2018 “World of Wonder” promises to be bigger, brighter, and better than ever. For nine years, Barbados has been host to one of the region’s biggest comic conventions and each year the team that puts on this outstanding show outdoes their previous efforts.
Don’t miss any of the unbelievable events that begin August 16 and continue on to August 19 as the fun won’t stop this weekend with all the glamour and genius that comes with creative power. From costumes to products and shows to the sharing of experience this weekend is packed with something for everyone.
AnimeKon 2018 is a four day celebration of all the things you know, and love, about pop-culture and entertainment including anime, comics, gaming, film, television and cosplay; all with a heavy dose of Caribbean charm.
Kicking off the creative convention is the Cosplay Catamaran Cruise on Thursday August 16th from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on board Jammin’ Catamaran. The well-known hype of the Jammin’ Catamaran Cruises promises to deliver on lots of drinks, “chunes”, and the incredible chance to hang out with fellow fans and all of the featured guests for a truly extraordinary day on the water. This 18+ cruise is sure to start the pop culture party the right way. You can be a part of the high sea spectacle for $150 all inclusive.
The party continues the next day, August 17 with the Playcation Pop-up Playground from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Divi Southwinds Beach Resort. This pop culture play day is free for kids 11 and under and free for any holders of AnimeKon tickets.
Don’t worry if you haven’t gotten your ticket because it’s just $10 for ages 12 to 18 and $20 for ages 19 and up. This is the newest addition to the AnimeKon antics and promises to be a perfect day of family friendly fun. Enjoy a fantastic day of exciting activities including Jumping Tents, Mini Rollercoaster, Quidditch, Naruto Races, Mermaid Barbados, K-Pop Dance Battles, Zorb Wars, and more. The party doesn’t stop there as the day winds down with a super special sundown pop/punk concert with Sundown Superhero.
That brings us to the day of dreams. The World of Wonder comes alive from Saturday 18 August & Sunday 19 August at The Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. For just $30 you can shop over 100 exhibitors for all your favourite foods, experiences and memorabilia. Put on your most impressive cosplay or any costume you desire to meet all your favourite stars like Manu Bennet, star of Arrow, The Hobbit and Spartacus, Olivia Olson, star of Adventure Time, Love Actually and The Powerpuff Girls and Kevin McNally, star of Disney’s Pirates of The Caribbean.
Who wouldn’t want to meet the man that plays Slade Wilson aka Deathstroke − the original inspiration for the Merc with the Mouth, Deadpool; or Manu Bennett’s other character − Azog the Definler from the Hobbit. Each of these actors have impacted lives around the globe and it promises to be a true treat to meet each and every one of them.
Melissa Young, who founded the AnimeKon with Omar Kennedy said: “Our cosplay tournament is one of the biggest in the region and attracts competitors from Trinidad, St Lucia, and Jamaica. Our Geekcation travel initiative which encourages fans from around the region and the world to #VisitBarbados for a pop culture experience full of Caribbean charm is one of the stand out experiences of the whole weekend.”
She went on to say: “We also have Olivia Olson from Adventure Time which is also has a huge global following. It’s the biggest convention we’ve ever done with more guests, more exhibitors, more partners, more events and from what we can gather from sales and messages . . . even more fans!”
The fun doesn’t stop at the con though as Cotton Candy Land: De Rave! Takes over from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday, August 18, at The Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre. This 18 and older party is only $20 and promises a truly sweet experience.
Likewise, Sunday, August 19, promises even more as we enter the night with the Villains X Vixens After Party to conclude the con. Just $20 for those 18 and older, from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. The Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre will host the official AnimeKon World of Wonder After Party hosted by Aeon Entertainment and sponsored by SLAM Condoms and featuring DJs Salt ‘N Don, Tonk & Jones, and Static & Master D.
