King: Board picks justified

“I know what I am doing. I never fail.” So says Minister of Sports, John King, in relation to the composition of the new National Sports Council board which has come under flack in some quarters.

King has been criticised for selecting a board that includes two chief administrators in Catherine Jordan, president of the Athletics Association of Barbados (AAB), and Nisha Craigwell, president of the Barbados Netball Association (BNA). Jordan is deputy chairman. That choice has stirred plenty of debate, but King thinks he has made the right decision.

“Who better than to sit down and help chart the way for organisations than people who are in it. It is no sense going out on the road and just picking up Tom, Dick and Harry and put them on a board. To what end?

“You need the people who are involved on a daily basis. I am confident about my team. The people that have been criticised present the prerequisite skills that I want and not because they are in those associations, it is what they do outside of them, skills that I need,” he said. (MK)
