The Barbados Davis Cup team announced that the king of swing Darian King will be turning out for battle this weekend against Ecuador, but that good news suffered a double fault with the local media when a press launch was staged at the Barbados Olympic Association’s Headquarters, Wildey on Wednesday.
A conflict arose which escalated into a shouting match between visiting Davis Cup official Tony Cho and Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) videographer, Harrington “Hal” Layne.
It was during the press interview with Barbados captain Damien Applewhaite that Layne realised that his microphone flag with the CBC branding had been replaced without his knowledge or permission and there was a Davis Cup flag on the microphone.
After the session with Applewhaite was concluded and the media team were awaiting the arrival of the Ecuador captain, Layne asked who had tampered with his equipment and he was told that it was the Davis Cup referee Cho of Canada who was sitting at the back of the room. (KB)
