Push for proper pork

Some pig farmers are not meeting the standards of Barbados’ major meat processor.

And it is against this background that the Barbados Agricultural Society (BAS) and HIPAC Limited are teaming up to improve the quality of porkers to satisfy not only local consumption, but also cut excessive imports.

“One of the issues we have in supplying HIPAC is maintaining standards and this initiative . . . [aims] to see how we can increase efficiency on farms and at least allow them to be able to satisfy the demand for processed pork by HIPAC,” said BAS chief executive officer James Paul.

He was speaking in a press briefing yesterday to announce the hosting of a seminar this weekend aimed at improving the quality of local pig meat. (SB)
