Rain has final say

Heavy mid-afternoon thunderstorms and a wet outfield caused the abandonment of the second ICC One-Day International Championship match between Windies Women and South Africa Women on Wednesday at the historic Kensington Oval.

South Africa would have been disappointed with the weather after they had posted a challenging 177 for eight following a late start, and an interruption after 10 overs resulted in the game being reduced to 38 overs.

The Windies’ reply never started. The rain began during the interval and umpires Leslie Reifer Jr, Jonathan Blades and Jacqueline Williams announced the abandonment at 4 pm.

Earlier, the Proteas were invited to bat after losing the toss once again. The Windies enjoyed the early exchanges when the visitors lost the wickets of Laura Wolvaardt (7), Lizelle Lee (22), Sune Luus (20) with the score on 53 in the 14th over. (HE)
