Finger clock at QEH

A new clock-in system that involves fingerprints is going into effect at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, (QEH) which for decades has been using the punch clock method.

But while the move had been discussed with the National Union of Public Workers, some of the workers at the health institution are upset by it complaining that the issue had not been discussed with them. Some of them do not favour the idea that something as sensitive as fingerprints will have to be used to check in with an employer.

However, others stated that the new biometric method is a way of keeping tabs on whether the employees are present on the job as in the past some of them have been using the old system of the punch cards to get others to punch in and out for them while they were away from the workplace.

On Wednesday there was a planned meeting between the QEH management and the workers about the system but that was postponed after the island was under a tropical storm warning. There is no word on when the meeting will now take place. (AC)
