Barbados was better for having the life that was Dr Anthony Phillips, one of the early lecturers at the University of the West Indies Cave Hill campus.

Phillips, who passed away on September 13, was lovingly remembered today during a funeral service at the St Lucy Parish Church.

In delivering his eulogy, head of the History and Philosophy Department at UWI Cave Hill Henderson Carter remembered him as a brilliant man with a wealth of knowledge who loved helping people and was concerned with the welfare of his students, colleagues and anyone in distress.

Carter also noted that “UWI was a central part of his life. He absolutely loved it there.”

Phillips retired from the university on October 1, 2004 and spent much of his retirement travelling, visiting libraries, researching and writing.

Also in attendance at the funeral this morning were Sir Phillip Greaves, Minister of Energy and Water Resources Wilfred Abrahams and noted historian Trevor Marshall, among many others.

Phillips will be cremated in a private ceremony at a later date. (DB)
