The Sanitation Service Authority (SSA) has been working with an inadequate number of trucks for more than five years but even so, general manager Rosalind Knight said no community ought to be dealing with a lack of collection for more than two weeks.

THE NATION went to areas of St Joseph, St Thomas and St George where residents pointed to piles of refuse which they said had been there for weeks, some for almost a month.
Public relations officer Carl Padmore said the SSA had been struggling with the lack of trucks and recent bad weather. Knight agreed but added that they were implementing measures to deal with the shortage.

“No one should have to wait that long for a collection, so we are looking to improve that and make sure every community gets a collection at least once a week by reallocating our resources,” she said.

Knight gave the assurance that the collection in affected areas should be regularised either by this weekend or next week.
However, she said resources were under severe strain, as only 13 SSA vehicles were in operation. (CA)
