State owned enterprises (SOEs) are in need of help if they are to be fit for purpose says Donna Wellington, president of the Barbados Bankers’ Association.

Wellington was speaking tonight at the Nation Talkback as one of the panellists discussing The Barbados Economy – The Road Ahead.

She says these enterprises need special assistance to ensure they are going in the right direction and are properly structured to operate efficiently.

Panellist Edward Clarke, head of the Barbados Private Sector Association said boards across state owned enterprises have failed to do their jobs. He added too they have not been held accountable.

He said while it may not be possible to get away from the practice of “putting people you know on boards” he underscored the importance of having competent people working in organisations that are not performing.

Clarke said this must change if there is to be efficiency. (CM)
