Despite Government looking to send home hundreds of public workers in the coming weeks, the jobs of thousands of teachers will be safe.

The assurance is coming from general secretary of the Barbados Union of Teachers (BUT), Herbert Gittens, In fact, rather than layoffs, more appointments for temporary teachers are expected, he told THE NATION on Wednesday.

“When I attended a Social Partnership meeting in August, I remember the Prime Minister had indicated the teaching service would not be affected in terms of teachers.

“I know that the teaching service, like many others, is special and you really would have to maintain that level of workers to complement the various schools and number of children they have,” Gittens said in an interview. (AD)
