Barbados Pride defeated the Jamaica Scorpions by 39 runs in their Regional Super 50 Cup second round cricket match at Kensington Oval Saturday night to finish their Group B exchanges on 19 points. It was their final match of the tournament as they failed to qualify for the semi-finals.
Set 247 to win after Barbados posted 246 for five in 50 overs, the Scorpions seemed on course for victory after a century fifth-wicket stand between Andre McCarthy and Nkrumah Bonner. The pair added 109 but a dramatic collapse triggered by the dismissal of Bonner for 41, saw the Jamaicans fold for 207 in 41.4 oversÂ
The last six wickets tumbled for 24 runs with 20 year-old fast medium bowler Shamar Springer taking five for 30 from 7.4 overs, his first five-wicket haul in regional cricket. He took his tally of wickets for the tournament to 16 and earned his second Man-of-the Match award in the process.
McCarthy and Nkrumah Bonner came to the rescue of the Jamaica Scorpions, lifting them from 74 for four to 183 before the fall of Bonner. McCarthy topscored with 83 off 96 balls with two sixes and eight fours.
Earlier, Jonathan Carter scored a fluent 82 off 69 balls with two sixes and seven fours to lead Barbados to a competitive score. Captain Shamarh Brooks made 60 off 72 deliveries with four boundaries. (PH)
